Discourse Community Map
For this group assignment we were paired with our "Face Value" groups. We were supposed to find any character who belongs to a discourse community. Our group decided to focus on the character Stitch from the Disney movie, "Lilo and Stitch".
Although working in a group can be hard at times, our group all put in the same amount of work throughout this project. We divided the work evenly and stayed in constant communication before the assignment was due that way we were all on the same page when things would get done. I believe our group worked well together to describe the different communities that were presented throughout the movie. When presenting to the class we may have slightly struggled however, I believe the class was still able to understand the different discourse communities and how Stitch fits into each of them. After this assignment, my group and I were able too see that discourse communities are everywhere not just in movies or books. Without even realizing it, we can be a part of a discourse community whether its at school, the workplace, or even inside our families. |
Visual Argument Project
For the Visual Argument Project, we were able to choose our groups. I worked with Alexa Castaneda and our group name was A&C Memorial Hospital because our argument was based on a nurses disciplinary lens. We decided to choose my research topic which is, "How can nurses make children who have suffered sexual abuse feel safe under their care?" It was important for us to raise awareness to health care professionals about always taking the child's sense of stability into consideration in hopes to help them overcome the situation in the future. This project was very different from my research paper because with the brochure, I had to shortly summarize all of my research in order to protray my message across to my target audience which is nurses.
Working in a group with this assignment was a bit difficult only because everyone in the class has different majors, therefore, they have different research topics. I believe this project should have been done indvidually in order for everyone in the class to raise awareness on their topic.
We were also assigned a PowerPoint in order to explain our rhetorical choices to develop our argument. On the brochure we chose a Teal color scheme to raise awareness for sexually abused victims. Images that we chose were also to raise awareness and to give our audience a visualization of what should be done in situations when children suffering abuse feel alone and scared.
After presenting our brochure to the class, I believe we delievered the message well and we answered any questions that the class had clearly. Alexa and I were given the oppurtunity to present this project in the Entering Student Program Showcase where we were able to raise awareness about our issue publicly.
